A Journey to the Source of River Ganga
The Gaumukh Tapovan Trek is a remarkable journey that seamlessly weaves together spiritual significance and Himalayan adventure. Set in the sacred Garhwal region of Uttarakhand, the trek begins from the holy town of Gangotri, one of the Char Dhams of Hinduism, where legends say the River Ganga descended from the heavens. As you walk along ancient paths that have been traversed by sages, pilgrims, and seekers for centuries, you are surrounded by an aura of deep cultural and spiritual energy. After reaching Bhojbasa, a windswept expanse flanked by the Bhagirathi river and rugged cliffs, the landscape begins to feel truly remote and mystical. From here, the trail gradually ascends toward Gaumukh, the sacred snout of the Gangotri Glacier, where the River Ganga emerges from a cavern of ice. As you approach Gaumukh, the terrain shifts dramatically—from dusty trails to glacial moraine. The air turns sharper, and the roar of the river grows louder, echoing off the rocks like a chant of the mountains themselves. Stepping carefully onto the Gangotri Glacier, you cross a raw, creaking expanse of ice and rock—a surreal, humbling experience that demands both focus and respect. The climb from Gaumukh to Tapovan is steep and challenging, requiring patience and steady footing as you ascend narrow paths alongside glacial ridges. But as you crest the final rise and enter Tapovan, a hidden world unfolds—an ethereal meadow tucked beneath towering Himalayan giants like Mt. Shivling and Meru. Surrounded by silence, prayer flags, and pristine peaks, you feel not just the thrill of adventure but the deep spiritual energy that has drawn sages here for centuries.

These are non-AC vehicles. Please pre-book your transport with us. Make your way to the sacred town of Gangotri. The drive from Dehradun (245 km) via Suwakholi, Mauriyana, Uttarkashi takes about 8–9 hours. Spend the evening soaking in the spiritual energy of this Himalayan town beside the River Bhagirathi
This is the first day of trekking, covering a distance of approximately 15 km. It is important to start early; leaving Gangotri around 5:00 AM is recommended so that you can reach the Gangoti National Park checkpost, located 2 km away, by 6:00 AM when it opens. Entry to the park is regulated, and only a limited number of visitors are allowed each day. At the checkpost, permits will be verified. Your bags will also be checked for plastic items such as bottles and food packets. The number of plastic items will be recorded on your permit, and a deposit fee will be collected, which will be refunded upon your return if the count matches. This system helps in maintaining the cleanliness of the park. After completing the formalities at the checkpost, continue trekking. Within 1 km, the Bhagirathi River will join the trail and will accompany you for a large part of the journey. After walking around 6 km more, you will reach Chirbasa at an altitude of approximately 3,400 meters. This point is generally reached in about five hours and is a good place to break for lunch. From Chirbasa, the trail becomes slightly more adventurous as it passes through a couple of rockfall zones. Trek leaders will guide you through these sections to ensure safety. The ascent remains gradual, making the trek comfortable. Carry a water bottle with you, as there are several waterfalls and mountain streams along the route where you can refill. From Chirbasa, it is another 7 km to Bhojbasa (approximately 3,800 meters), which typically takes about four hours to reach. Bhojbasa is where you will set up camp and stay for the night.
The 4-km trek from Bhojbasa to Gaumukh (4,025 meters) is moderately challenging and passes through interesting terrain. The trail starts behind the GMVN rest house, involving a short climb to reach the marked path. In most sections, the trail is clear, though in a few places you may have to find your way. Throughout the trek, the Bhagirathi River flows nearby. The gradient between Bhojbasa and Gaumukh is steep. Along the way, trekkers will cross unnamed streams, boulders, and enjoy continuous views of snow-covered mountains. Wildlife sightings such as bharal (blue sheep) and various bird species are possible. A few minutes after leaving Bhojbasa, Shivling Peak becomes visible on the right, with the Bhagirathi peaks straight ahead. Carry sufficient water for the trek. The Gangotri Glacier is visible from a distance, and trekkers are advised not to go closer than 500 meters to it. It typically takes about 3 hours to reach Gaumukh from Bhojbasa. At Gaumukh, you can visit a small Shiva temple and take in views of the glacier and surrounding peaks. From Gaumukh, the 5-km trek to Tapovan (4,460 meters) begins. This section involves a steep ascent with clear views of prominent peaks. The final kilometre to Tapovan is a near-vertical climb, including a crossing of the Akash Ganga stream. The climb is demanding and should ideally be done with a guide. Tapovan is a high-altitude alpine meadow and a popular campsite.
